Many people that live in large cities tend to just go to the nearest gas station and begin fueling. However, because of their lack of willingness to shop around, they could find that they are paying up to fifteen cents more, per gallon, than they actually needed to. In some cases it doesn’t make sense to spend your time shopping around for gas because the prices are all so similar. If, however, you are someone who drives for your job or you commute a long distance to and from your school or work, then a few cents a gallon could mean the difference of thousands of dollars a year.
For the people that need to find the best prices for gas there are a few great options. The first of which is to find a gas station that is near where you live or work that has others near it. When the competition is close gas stations must compete directly with one another which drives their prices down. If you’re not able to find such a gas station, another option is to find a store that offers a discount if you’re a member with them. Sometimes you will need to apply for this membership and pay a fee of up to $100 a year. However, if you’re spending a thousand dollars without it, the membership makes sense.
Finally, if neither of those options works for you, keep your eyes open when you travel off of your normal routes. At these times you may be able to find cheap fuel somewhere and, even if you don’t need it, can stop in and top off your tank. Also, if it’s close enough it may be possible to return for an occasional fill up.
